La Torre dei Canonici — medieval tower in Lumellogno, Piedmont
History & Heritage

La Torre dei Canonici

A historic tower built in the 1400s — older than Columbus’s voyage to America. From documents dating to 908 AD to carefully restored spaces: every corner holds a fragment of Lumellogno’s past.

The medieval tower of Lumellogno was built in the 15th century to guard the mill on the Orione canal. The first mention of the Canons dates back to 908 AD. Today it houses a luxury farmhouse with wine cellar, meeting rooms and garden.

A Tower from the 1400s

La Torre dei Canonici stands on one of the oldest settlements in the Novara region. The name ‘Canonici’ refers to the canons of the cathedral chapter — clergy who governed the local territory from the early Middle Ages. The residence offers unique spaces to discover: the medieval tower, the wine cellar with its original brick vaults, the dining room with fireplace, the meeting rooms in the Antico Mulino and the landscaped gardens. Archaeological finds attest to human presence going back to prehistory and ancient Rome, making this historic Italian farmhouse a crossroads of civilisations stretching back millennia.

Prehistory & Ancient Rome
Archaeological finds confirm human presence since the earliest ages. The site is one of the oldest settlements in the area.
908 – 931 AD
First documented mention: Bishop Dagiberto grants the Canons — clergy of the cathedral chapter — a fortified estate with castle in Lumellogno, marking the beginning of the Canons’ story in these lands.
1013
The Canons become Lords of Lumellogno, consolidating their power and influence over the territory.
15th Century
The Tower is built with its distinctive ogival arch window, erected to defend the mill along the Orione canal. Built in the 1400s — around the same time as Leonardo da Vinci was painting in nearby Milan — the medieval tower Piedmont still dominates the Lumellogno landscape today.
